One of the ‘must see’ side events of the 13th Biennale de Lyon in 2015 was “Rendez-vous”. Rendez-vous, Biennale de Jeune Art Contemporain, was presented at IAC Lyon and created in 2002 by the Museum of Contemporary Art of Lyon with financial support from the Region Rhone-Alpes, and it associates four contemporary art institutions amongst them IAC lyon. Since 2003, Rendez-Vous Biennale has formed a unique international platform dedicated to the discovery of young French artists and international artists living in France.
In the 2015 edition of the Rendez-Vous biennale exhibition hosted by IAC Lyon, 21 artists are present: Maxime Lamarche, Johann Rivat, Adélaïde Feriot, Ran Huang, Lola Gonzàlez, Nicolas Garait-Leavenworth, David Posth-Kolher, Ruth Cornelisse, Daniel Otero Torres, Daniel R. Small, Naufus Ramirez-Figueroa, Celia-Junior, Gaëlle Choisne, Anastasis Stratakis, Jumana Manna & Sille Storihle, Sümer Sayin, Fabrice Croux, Rathin Barman, Sidy Diallo, Keiichiro Terea.
In earlier editions Rendez-vous made a song impression, being one of the first to present artists like Apichatpong Weerasethakul (TH) (Palme d’Or in Cannes, 2010), Ryan Gander (UK), Nathlie Djurberg (SE) (Lion d’Or Biennale of Venice 2009) and other now well known contemporary artists. Rendez-vous Biennale is a very successful and special event whose propositions we follow closely.
The success of Rendez-vous Biennale de Jeune Art Contemporain is possibly due to the special and elaborate formula that is used to select artists. The final selection is made in a collaboration, consisting of the four artistic directors of the four institutions in and around Lyon (Biennale de Lyon, MAC Lyon, IAC Lyon Villeurbanne/Rhône-Alpes, École Nationale Supérieur des Beaux-arts Lyon), supported by the assistant curator of IAC Lyon and in collaboration on invitation, with the artistic directors of 10 international biennials. Together they make the selection of artists under 35 years of age for this two-yearly event.
